John W. Lilly Family Papers 1835-1936

John W. Lilly (1818-1883) appears to have come to Texas by 1838. He engaged in businesses in Matagorda and Wharton Counties. Prior to 1861, he moved to Wilson County and formed a business partnership with W. K. Baylor. Correspondence, legal documents, financial documents, maps, and printed material document members of the Lilly, Sutherland, and Craighead families.

Physician Dr. John Sutherland, Jr. (1792-1867) was born to John and Agnes Sutherland near Danville, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. In 1816, he married Diana Kennedy in Knox County, Tennessee, and, after her death, moved to Texas in 1829 with his brother George Sutherland. With his son William, Sutherland settled in San Antonio in 1835, and treated members of the Alamo garrison. Col.
